Are Hot Flashes Dangerous?

Hot flashes could mean more than just perimenopause!

If you're experiencing hot flashes, you need to read this.

Most women think hot flashes are just an annoying perimenopause symptom. Something you have to tolerate until they go away.

But research shows they could be a warning sign for cardiovascular disease.

Here's what studies have found:

Women with hot flashes are more likely to have:

-Adverse lipid profiles (high cholesterol)

-Insulin resistance (poor blood sugar control)

-Higher risk of developing high blood pressure

-Reduced blood flow in their arteries

-Greater calcium buildup in the aorta (early sign of heart disease)

Even more concerning:

A study found that women with consistent hot flashes over 2 years had thicker carotid artery walls—a marker for increased heart disease risk—especially in women who were overweight or obese.

Another meta-analysis of over 213,000 women found that those with hot flashes had a 28% higher risk of coronary heart disease compared to women without hot flashes.

The timing matters too:

Women who experienced hot flashes early in perimenopause had higher arterial thickness than those who had low or no hot flashes throughout the transition.

What this means for you:

Hot flashes aren't just uncomfortable. They could be your body's way of signaling that your cardiovascular system needs attention.

If you're experiencing hot flashes:

Talk to your doctor about cardiovascular screening

Get your cholesterol checked

Monitor your blood pressure

Check your blood sugar/insulin sensitivity

Prioritize heart-healthy habits (exercise, nutrition, stress management)

Don't dismiss your symptoms. Don't just "deal with it."

Listen to your body. It's trying to tell you something 💛

Create the Habit

Every month, I want to encourage you to create a health habit, because I believe health is truly in your own hands.

I came upon this interesting study that showed that after every meal, you should prioritize walking. According to this study, a brief 10-min walk immediately after a meal appears to be an effective and feasible approach for the management of hyperglycemia. Interestingly, a 10- minute walk immediately after glucose ingestion was more effective at lowering blood glucose compared to a 30 minute walk started 30 minutes later!

I hope this regimen can be less intimidating for my busy women, whether it is because of work or young children. The point is, build a habit, perfect it later!

See if this habit decreases any of the symptoms you experience in perimenopause or menopause using my free symptom tracker below!
