Did you know this about menopause?
Cardiovascular risk (CVD) and breast cancer are both causes of morbidity and mortality in the United States. CVD affects about 47.8 million women and breast cancer affects about 3.32 million women. If that is not already concerning enough, in 2014, the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention attributed about 1 in 3.3 deaths to CVD and 1 in 8.3 deaths to coronary heart disease, compared to 1 in 31.5 deaths to breast cancer! I know many of us are afraid of cancers, specifically breast cancer, but to know there is an even larger, more silent killer, is more concerning to me.
Also interestingly, non-Hispanic black women had higher rates of coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke, and breast cancer than non-Hispanic white women and Hispanic women.
Many risk factors have been shown to be associated with CVD like unhealthy diets, higher body weight, decreased physical activity, smoking, and higher levels of lipids. That is why the sooner you can focus on lifestyle changes and increasing exercise the right way, the lower risk you have for health problems in the future. Create the Habit
Every month, I want to encourage you to create a health habit, because I believe health is truly in your own hands.
If you feel like you cannot take out the 30 minutes 3-4 times a week to have a dedicated exercise session, or if you work a 9-5, I would like you to think about incorporating your exercise in increments.
Try incorporating any movement in your day, like doing 10 body squats every hour on the hour during your 9-5, so by the end of the day, you will have done around 80 squats without stepping into the gym. And best of all, it took less than 30 minutes throughout the day,
I hope this regimen can be less intimidating for my busy women, whether it is because of work or young children. The point is, build a habit, perfect it later!
